Identity system: My Wild Skies | Sarah Martinez

Emerging writer Sarah Martinez needed a strong, distinctive brand to set her apart from others with the same name. I photographed her and set the type for the name she had selected. Then I helped customize her web site to tie everything together.

This the second site I have designed for Melinda. We noticed a trend in artist sites toward simplicity and elegance; page designs that don’t shout about themselves but only support the art images and information.

Beverly wanted to use a detail from one of her paintings as a background for the site. Where it didn’t support the content I graded it into a neutral tone.

Logo: Seattle Young Artists Music Festival

The Festival Association had an idea for their logo and needed a professional rendering. I searched for a typeface that would give a balanced presentation of the first and third characters.

The style is similar to logos for other organizations that serve young musicians, yet sufficiently distinctive to identify the Seattle Young Artists as unique.

Concert program: Winners of the 37th SYAMFA Concerto Competition

This was the third year I designed the programs for the Seattle Young Artists Music Festival. It’s a process of integrating content from numerous sources, some of whom are seasoned professionals and some which had never provided a print advertisement or artist biography before. I try to give it a serious look, as befits the subject matter (classical music) while making it fresh for the many young participants and their friends who make up the audience.

The product documentation team designed and wrote this piece together. Our goal was to minimize the number of words. The procedures contain only the steps. For readers who want explanations, we put a Q & A section with tips and a list of related topics on the far side of the page.

In 1997, this piece received an award of Achievement in the category of Software User Guides from the Society for Technical Communication.
